Ground Investigations & Site Services

Sometimes you need to go beyond what the literature and theory states…

It is part of the proportionate approach and the evidence based approach that we have endorsed and fostered, or that defines us. We test the literature and we test the theory by actually going into the ground and working out what these trees are doing. And sometimes were right, and sometimes they teach us something new. But at the end if the day, what it does is it gives us the best, available evidence to prove why were doing something in the way that we are doing it.

We save this work typically for really important sites where that forensic level of understanding of what tree roots are doing is the difference between unlocking the sites potential, or not, or being at a public enquiry, or not.

Air Spade Investigation

Ground investigations may be necessary to determine the full extent of the Root Protection Area (RPA) and assess its true impact. This can be achieved by excavating trial pits within the RPA and documenting the size and location of roots over 25mm in diameter.

The findings from the trial pits can be plotted onto a technical drawing, providing a clear illustration of impact on the RPA. Based on these results, the RPA can be adjusted to reflect a reduced area, these findings can be presented to the local planning authority’s tree officer in the form of a detailed technical drawing and reports.

Site Supervision & Watching Brief

We frequent supervise and inform on specialist construction techniques within Root Protection Areas of trees and where tree works take place in sensitive settings such as Conservation Areas and TPO cases.

We also provide a recorded monitoring service to ensure that tree protection measures are appropriately sited and constructed. Our services are tailored to site sensitivity and starts pre-soil removal/construction and continues through to project completion.

Our qualified team also has experience in assisting the tree officers of various local authorities in keeping up with their duties during peak times and periods of absence.

Ellen Courtney-Thompson BA(Hons)

Ellen is unique in that she can bring us into the 21st century, away from a world of wood. And roots. And into one of something called the interweb? She also has a background in fine art and design, which means she is more than qualified to advise us on how to make trees look good and to tell people what we do well, in a way that is visually appealing. She's also got quite a lot of sass, can keep up with the guys in the office, and is one of the few people that can get Bosun to behave – even when he’s testing the boundaries and tries to put his paw in her mouth…

His keen eye for detail enables him to deliver precise and efficient solutions tailored to meet the unique needs of each project. Outside of work, he likes to entertain his family with his "legendary" guitar solos, "virtuoso" piano performances, and unparalleled air guitar skills—though they might describe it more as enthusiastic noise-making. Gavlar can often be found scurrying towards the buffet at a Christmas do and makes a mean cup of tea. Gavlar’s been carrying the Team since 2013.
